What is Priapism?

You may need diagnostic testing to figure out what kind of priapism you have. The root of priapism might be discovered by additional tests. Your treatment will probably start in an emergency department before all test results are available.

Such diagnostic exams include:

Measurement Of Sperm Gas In The Pen: A small needle is used in this test to take a sample of blood from your penis. If the blood is dark, devoid of oxygen, ischemic priapism is most likely the cause. The priapism is most likely nonischemic if it is brilliant red. The type of priapism can be determined by a lab test that counts the blood's concentration of specific gases.

A Blood Test: Red blood cell and platelet counts can be determined by testing blood taken from your arm. Findings could indicate the presence of some malignancies, other blood problems, or diseases such sickle cell anemia.

Ultrasound: Doppler ultrasonography is a noninvasive diagnostic that uses circulating red blood cells to reflect high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) in order to measure blood flow through blood arteries. With the help of this test, you may determine whether the blood flow in your penis indicates ischemia or nonischemic priapism. An injury or abnormality that could be the underlying cause may also be discovered during the exam.

Toxicology Evaluation: To check for medications that could be the cause of priapism, your doctor may request a blood or urine test.
